On September 30, Flydubai Flight FZ1073, carrying more than 170 passengers and crew from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was forced into an emergency diversion after the co-pilot attacked Captain Smit Machchhar in the cockpit with a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft. The plane rapidly lost altitude before Machchhar, despite suffering serious injuries, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to overpower the attacker; two off-duty pilots then helped land the aircraft safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The UAE subsequently launched an investigation, and on October 3 its Attorney General said the probe had found that the co-pilot attempted to carry out a terrorist act. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances, motive, possible links and physical and digital evidence, with authorities in other countries also looking into the incident.
