For Malcolm Disson, a childhood fairground disappointment became an unlikely marker of a lifetime spent waiting for a lucky break. At 12, he won a goldfish at a fair in Hampstead Heath, only to discover that it was already dead when he opened the bag. More than four decades later, the 58-year-old father has experienced a rather more extraordinary win: a £4 million mansion in Yorkshire, complete with a lake, tennis court and £250,000 in cash, through an Omaze prize draw.As reported by The Yorkshire Post and The Mirror, Disson’s winning entry cost just £30 through his Omaze subscription. The prize has made him the owner of a Grade II listed property in Little Ouseburn, North Yorkshire, and marks a dramatic change in fortunes for someone who once struggled to keep his own business afloat.
From a dead goldfish to a dream home
Disson’s earlier experience of winning was hardly encouraging. The goldfish at the fair remained his most memorable prize for 46 years, until he won £8 on a lottery ticket just two weeks before the Omaze announcement. He had taken the small win as a sign that his luck might finally be changing, but could scarcely have anticipated what would follow. The Yorkshire Post reports that the six-bedroom property comes mortgage-free, with stamp duty and legal fees covered. It also includes furnishings worth £155,000 and a separate two-bedroom cottage, giving the new owner considerable flexibility. According to The Mirror, Disson can choose to live in the house, rent it out or sell it.The estate’s lake, tennis court and expansive grounds offer a lifestyle far removed from the homes Disson has occupied over the years. He previously lived in a three-bedroom terraced house in Watford and has spent the past 18 years in Newbury, Berkshire, where he currently owns a semi-detached home.
A business built on risk and persistence
Behind the unexpected fortune is a career shaped by a significant financial gamble. In 2004, Disson co-founded The British Shop, a specialist company near Heathrow that handles the packing and international shipping of fine art and antiques.Getting the business started required him to remortgage his home. The first couple of years brought considerable financial pressure, with repayments proving difficult to manage. As reported by The Yorkshire Post and The Mirror, the risk came close to ruining him, but he continued working to establish the company. His professional life has since involved handling valuable collections and arranging their safe transportation for clients with impressive homes. The contrast is now striking: Disson has found himself in possession of a property comparable to the kind of residences he once encountered through his work.
A new chapter for the family
The win is particularly meaningful for Disson’s family. He has two daughters, Lilly, 22, and Daisy, 18, and believes the prize will provide them with greater financial security. It has also eased the pressure on him, giving him the possibility of slowing down or retiring earlier, although he has indicated that he remains passionate about his work. His border terrier, T-Bone, will also be part of the family’s new surroundings. A keen cook, Disson is already considering bringing everyone together at the Yorkshire property for Christmas.Although he had never visited Yorkshire before seeing his new home, he has since explored York and is looking forward to discovering the area’s pubs and local beers. The house also offers opportunities to revisit old interests, including tennis, as well as make time for reading in its library and gardening in its potting shed.
A prize with a charitable contribution
The Omaze Million Pound House Draw also generated funds for Blood Cancer UK. The Yorkshire Post reports that the organisation is set to receive £4.5 million through the partnership, adding a charitable dimension to the competition. For Disson, however, the most immediate change is personal: a financial burden has lifted, his daughters have a more secure future, and a first visit to Yorkshire has turned into an entirely unexpected new beginning.Images Courtesy: istock and Mark Field Photography
