NEW DELHI: Festivals in India bring people together through lights, colours, music, food and community celebrations. From bursting firecrackers and decorating homes to playing with colours, organising processions and gathering along riverbanks, festivities are an integral part of the country’s social and cultural life. But as celebrations grow in scale, so does their environmental footprint. The pollution generated during festivals is often discussed in isolation, particularly when air quality deteriorates after Diwali. However, the environmental impact of celebrations goes much further. Firecrackers release particulate matter into the atmosphere, synthetic colours can introduce chemicals into water bodies, large gatherings generate plastic waste, and loud music and fireworks contribute to noise pollution. These effects are not confined to a particular festival or community. Across different celebrations, the use of disposable materials, increased consumption, transportation, decorative lighting and improper waste disposal can put additional pressure on the environment.
Festive celebrations leave behind plastic waste, chemical residues and firecracker debris, polluting our air, water and soil.
The consequences can extend beyond the days of festivities, affecting public health, urban sanitation, water quality and local ecosystems. In cities already struggling with vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, construction dust and untreated waste, the additional burden can make environmental management more challenging. So, what happens to the environment when millions of people celebrate simultaneously, and how do these activities affect our everyday lives?
Diwali and the science of air pollution
Diwali is among the occasions when the relationship between celebrations and air pollution becomes particularly visible. Firecrackers release a mixture of gases, suspended particles and chemical compounds into the atmosphere. Their emissions include particulate matter such as PM2.5 and PM10, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Depending on their composition, fireworks can also release metallic compounds, including barium and aluminium. The concern is particularly around PM2.5, particles measuring 2.5 micrometres or less. These particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, reaching the alveoli, the tiny air sacs where oxygen enters the bloodstream. Some components of particulate pollution can also enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation.
PM2.5 particles penetrate deep into the lungs, trigger inflammation and pose respiratory and cardiovascular health risks.
Dr Abhishek Agrawal, Medical Officer at a government hospital, explains how exposure to firecracker emissions can affect respiratory health.“During festivals like Diwali, the concentration of pollutants in the air can increase due to firecracker emissions. People inhale these pollutants, particularly fine particulate matter, which can enter deep into the lungs and cause irritation and inflammation of the respiratory tract. We often see people complaining of coughing, throat irritation, breathlessness and worsening respiratory symptoms during periods of poor air quality.“The impact is not uniform across the population. Children, elderly people and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions are particularly vulnerable to sudden changes in air quality.“Children, elderly people and individuals suffering from asthma, COPD or other respiratory conditions are particularly vulnerable. Their respiratory systems may not be able to cope with sudden exposure to high levels of pollution. Even people who do not have a pre-existing respiratory illness can experience discomfort, especially when pollution levels remain elevated for several hours,” Agrawal said. The problem can also continue after the celebrations end. During the post-monsoon period, low wind speeds, atmospheric stability and temperature inversions can prevent pollutants from dispersing quickly. When firecracker emissions combine with existing sources such as vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions and construction dust, pollution levels can remain elevated.“The effects of pollution do not necessarily disappear once the firecrackers stop. Fine particles can remain suspended in the atmosphere, depending on weather conditions. People may continue experiencing coughing, throat irritation, wheezing and breathing difficulties in the following days. Those with existing respiratory conditions should be especially cautious,” Agrawal added.
Beyond the lungs: How festive pollution affects multiple organs
Air pollution is not merely a respiratory concern. Exposure to particulate matter, chemical emissions and excessive noise can affect several organs, including the heart, brain and nervous system. While the lungs are the first point of contact for inhaled pollutants, fine particles can trigger inflammatory responses that affect other parts of the body. Air pollution has been associated with increased blood pressure, disturbances in heart rhythm and a higher risk of cardiovascular complications, particularly among people with existing heart conditions.
Festive activities release a mix of chemicals, particulate matter and plastic waste, polluting air, water and soil.
“The impact of festive pollution is not limited to the lungs. Fine particulate matter, particularly PM2.5, can penetrate deep into the alveoli and trigger oxidative stress and inflammation. This can lead to coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and asthma attacks. Air pollution can also increase blood pressure, disturb heart rhythms and trigger cardiovascular complications, including heart attacks, in vulnerable individuals,” Agrawal explained. The brain and nervous system can also be affected. Exposure to polluted air and excessive noise can contribute to headaches, dizziness, stress and sleep disturbances. Prolonged exposure to air pollution has also been associated with adverse effects on cognitive health.Chemical exposure presents another concern. Certain toxic metals and chemical residues released by fireworks and other festive materials can pose risks to organs such as the kidneys and liver, depending on the substance, concentration and duration of exposure.Noise pollution adds another dimension to the health burden. Sudden, high-intensity sounds from firecrackers can cause tinnitus, temporary hearing discomfort and, at sufficiently high exposure levels, permanent hearing damage.
Can a few hours of festive pollution cause lasting health problems?
One of the common misconceptions about festive pollution is that its effects are limited to the duration of celebrations. However, even short-term exposure to high concentrations of pollutants can trigger health complications, particularly among vulnerable individuals.People with asthma may experience sudden attacks, while those with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions may develop breathing difficulties or other complications. Repeated exposure over time can increase the risk of chronic health problems.
Festive pollutants spread through air, water and soil, entering the food chain and threatening human health and ecosystems.
“Even a few hours of exposure to high levels of pollution can trigger asthma attacks, breathing difficulties and cardiovascular complications in vulnerable individuals. Repeated exposure increases the risk of long-term health problems. The duration of symptoms varies depending on the level of exposure and the person’s health. Some people may recover within a few hours, while others may continue experiencing symptoms for several days,” Agrawal said. The effects can also be reflected in healthcare demand. Indian studies examining air pollution during and after Diwali have reported increases in respiratory complaints, hospital visits and admissions, particularly involving asthma exacerbations and breathing difficulties.“Studies in India have reported an increase in respiratory hospital visits and admissions following Diwali, particularly involving asthma attacks, breathing difficulties and other respiratory complaints. Hospitals and healthcare facilities also deal with cases involving burns, eye injuries and hearing-related problems during festive periods,” Agrawal said.
The environmental footprint of celebrations
While air pollution receives considerable attention, other forms of environmental degradation often go unnoticed during festivals. The use of synthetic colours during celebrations, for instance, can create problems for water bodies and soil. Some commercially available colours may contain chemical compounds and heavy metals that can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and eye problems. When washed away, these substances can enter drainage systems and eventually reach rivers, lakes and other water bodies.Similarly, religious offerings, flowers, plastic packaging and decorative materials discarded during large gatherings can add to water and land pollution. Idol immersion activities involving plaster of Paris, synthetic paints and non-biodegradable decorations can further increase the waste entering lakes and rivers. The consequences are particularly concerning in urban areas where water bodies are already under pressure from untreated sewage, industrial discharge and solid waste. Additional festive waste can worsen existing contamination and affect aquatic ecosystems.Large public celebrations and processions also generate considerable quantities of disposable plates, plastic bottles, food packaging and other materials. When waste is not segregated or collected properly, it can clog drains, accumulate in public spaces and eventually enter nearby water bodies. The problem does not end with the celebrations. Municipal sanitation workers are often left to clear large quantities of discarded materials, firecracker remnants, food waste and plastic packaging. Improper disposal and open burning of collected waste can further contribute to local pollution.
Noise pollution: The impact beyond what we can see
Another dimension of festive pollution is noise, which can affect people even when there is no visible deterioration in air quality.Firecrackers, loudspeakers, musical processions and public celebrations can expose residential neighbourhoods to excessive sound levels. Sudden explosions and prolonged exposure to loud music can interfere with sleep, concentration and everyday routines.Repeated exposure to excessive noise can also contribute to stress, anxiety and hearing-related problems. People with cardiovascular conditions, infants, elderly residents and patients recovering from illnesses may be particularly affected by disturbances during late-night celebrations. The impact extends to animals and urban wildlife. Pets can experience distress due to sudden loud noises, while birds and other species may alter their movement and behaviour in response to repeated disturbances. The World Health Organization has associated excessive environmental noise with sleep disturbance, hearing impairment and cardiovascular health risks. This makes noise pollution an important public health concern rather than merely an inconvenience during celebrations.
The hidden burden of electricity consumption and festive shopping
Modern celebrations also involve a considerable increase in consumption. Decorative lighting across homes, markets and commercial establishments increases electricity demand, while shopping, gift packaging, food deliveries and travel add to energy use and waste generation.Although LED lights consume less electricity than conventional lighting, their widespread use across residential and commercial areas can still contribute to higher cumulative demand.
Festive noise from firecrackers and loud music can damage hearing, disrupt sleep, trigger stress and affect heart health.
Excessive artificial lighting also contributes to light pollution, which can interfere with the natural day-night cycles of birds, insects and other wildlife. For nocturnal species, artificial illumination can affect navigation, feeding and other behavioural patterns. The growing use of plastic decorations, disposable utensils, thermocol, synthetic materials and packaging creates another challenge. Much of this waste is used for a limited period before being discarded, adding to the burden on already stretched municipal waste-management systems. These individual activities may appear relatively small, but their combined impact across densely populated cities can be considerable.
Why the effects can last beyond the festivities
One of the reasons festive pollution becomes a concern is that the environmental impact does not always end when celebrations stop.Airborne particles can remain suspended depending on weather conditions, while chemical residues and improperly disposed materials can continue affecting soil and water quality. Waste accumulated in drainage systems can also create problems during subsequent rainfall. The extent of pollution depends on several factors, including the scale of celebrations, the materials used, local environmental conditions and the efficiency of waste collection and disposal. It is also important to distinguish between pollution generated during festivals and the wider pollution crisis. Festivals are not the sole reason behind deteriorating air or water quality. Instead, they can add concentrated emissions and waste to an environment already dealing with multiple sources of contamination. This cumulative impact also raises questions about environmental inequality. A person celebrating indoors may have limited exposure to pollution, while a street vendor, traffic policeman, delivery worker or sanitation worker may remain exposed for several hours. Similarly, children and people with existing health conditions may face greater health risks than others.
Can celebrations become more environmentally responsible?
Reducing festive pollution does not mean giving up celebrations. It requires greater awareness of how everyday choices during these occasions affect the environment.Using natural colours, opting for traditional clay idols, avoiding single-use plastics, segregating waste and ensuring that religious offerings are disposed of responsibly can help reduce the burden on water bodies and public spaces. Community celebrations, designated immersion facilities and better waste collection can also improve environmental management.Individual precautions are equally important, particularly during periods of poor air quality. Agrawal recommends avoiding areas with heavy firecracker smoke, limiting outdoor activities when pollution levels are high and taking measures to reduce indoor exposure.“People should avoid unnecessary outdoor activities when air quality is poor, particularly during early morning and late evening hours if pollution levels are elevated. Patients with asthma should follow their prescribed medication and treatment plans. Children and elderly people should limit exposure to smoke and avoid areas where firecrackers are being burst.”He also recommends wearing a well-fitted N95 mask when outdoor exposure to particulate pollution cannot be avoided, keeping windows closed during periods of heavy pollution and using HEPA air purifiers indoors, if available.

Outdoor exercise should be avoided when pollution levels are high. Firecracker residues should be cleaned using damp methods rather than dry sweeping, which can resuspend particles in the air.People experiencing persistent breathlessness, wheezing or chest pain should seek medical attention rather than dismissing the symptoms as temporary festive discomfort.Ultimately, the environmental cost of celebrations cannot be measured only by the pollution recorded on a particular day. It must also account for the waste left behind, the pressure on natural resources and the health implications for people who continue to live and work in these surroundings.Festivals are an important part of India’s cultural and social fabric. The challenge is to ensure that the joy of celebrations does not come at the cost of the air people breathe, the water they depend on and the environment they share.
