Is your child becoming irritable these days? Does he or she get angry over small things? If your child gets angry even in happy and relaxed environments, you need to be cautious. This anger and irritability could be caused by stress related to exams.
The pressure to perform well in exams is currently very high on students. Both teachers and parents want children to excel and top the exams. Under this burden of expectations, students are facing mental stress, leading to complaints of exam phobia.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Emotional symptoms include a lack of self-confidence about the results and exam preparation, fear of failure, constant stress and feelings of hopelessness, irritability over small matters, anxiety, restlessness, or discomfort. Some students may even experience panic attacks.
How to Manage Exam Fear
Engage in light exercise or yoga daily to calm the mind and improve focus. Avoid comparing yourself to others and stay positive. Parents should encourage children and assure them of their success.
Additionally, motivate them to take walks in the morning, which will maintain positive energy in the body and help with concentration while studying.
Dietary Considerations
During exams, both the body and mind require extra nutrition, so include fruits, milk, dry fruits, oats, beans, sweet potatoes, fresh juices, leafy vegetables, coconut water, paneer, yogurt, and buttermilk in the diet. Also, make sure to drink enough water and avoid fast food.
Don’t Focus Only on Marks
Sometimes, parents set unrealistic expectations for their children. They must understand their child’s abilities and avoid comparing them to others. Instead of comparison, parents should continue to motivate and support their children.
Therapy Can Help
Counseling and psychotherapy can be very helpful in overcoming exam fear. These therapies teach children ways to cope with stress and offer tips on staying calm during exams. If a child is unable to study due to exam fear or becomes anxious in the exam hall, this therapy can be beneficial.
Do Not Take Pressure for Perfection
If the child is suddenly angry, anxious, avoids exams, finds it difficult to focus on studies, forgets things they’ve learned, or experiences negative thoughts, these should not be ignored. Instead, consult a psychiatrist. If you are a student, don’t be afraid of these signs; share them with your parents.
They will surely understand. If you didn’t perform well in an exam, do not get discouraged, but keep moving forward. If the stress from exams is overwhelming and affecting mental health, immediately contact a mental health professional.
