New Delhi: With the monsoon at the doorstep, Public Works Department on Tuesday completed the repair of 3,433 potholes across the national capital, covering 1,400km, stated Delhi govt. The one-day drive, once considered nearly impossible, was accomplished with speed, quality and transparency, it added. The drive began early on Tuesday morning and continued into the evening, mending potholes across main roads, internal lanes and vulnerable accident zones. Delhi was divided into three key zones — east, south, and north — with work carried out simultaneously in all regions. Over 200 maintenance vans, fitted with advanced machinery and high-quality material, were deployed. PWD also deployed over 1,000 personnel, including 70 assistant engineers, 150 junior engineers and hundreds of workers and supervisors.PWD officials said the pothole data was gathered through citizens’ complaints, drone mapping and zonal surveys, a combination of people’s participation and tech-driven governance. “Every repair was documented with geo-tagged and time-stamped photos, taken before and after the work, a measure introduced to ensure complete transparency and eliminate any scope of malpractice,” said an official. “This wasn’t just a pothole repair mission, it was a commitment to end the cycle of delays and excuses. Every pothole filled was a message that delivery is possible when the intent is honest,” said PWD minister Parvesh Verma.Several ministers and MLAs monitored the work in their respective constituencies, ensuring on-the-spot resolution of issues and strict adherence to quality standards, PWD said. Verma inspected several sites and interacted with engineers and workers. His involvement sent a strong message that infrastructure delivery was now a political priority, not a bureaucratic task, said govt. The timing was critical as potholes become major safety hazards during the monsoon, especially for two-wheeler riders. With this move, govt aims to reduce accident risks, waterlogging complaints and commuter discomfort. The maintenance vans will operate throughout the monsoon for immediate response. This feat was made possible under the leadership of CM Rekha Gupta and the direct oversight of the PWD minister, govt stated.Verma said 150km new roads were laid, another 100km was in progress, and govt targeted 500km of total road work by next March. In waterlogging-prone areas, joint teams of PWD, Delhi Development Authority and National Highways Authority of India are working to address long-standing issues, govt said.
