Patrick Mahomes has already established himself as one of the NFL’s biggest stars, but his ambitions are reaching far beyond football. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has quietly built a growing portfolio in professional sports ownership, giving him a stake in three different franchises. While he continues to chase championships on the field, Mahomes is also laying the groundwork for a future that could keep him deeply connected to sports long after his playing career ends.
Patrick Mahomes has ownership ties to three major sports franchises
Mahomes entered the world of professional sports ownership in 2020 when he purchased a stake in the Kansas City Royals. The move came at a time when his NFL career was rapidly taking off, and it gave him a unique connection to another major professional team in the city. His investment in the Royals also made headlines because Mahomes became the youngest owner in Major League Baseball at the time. That was a notable achievement for a quarterback who was still establishing himself as one of football’s premier players. But Mahomes did not stop with baseball. He later became part of the ownership group of Sporting Kansas City, expanding his business interests into Major League Soccer. The decision showed that his interest in professional sports was not limited to the sport he played.Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, also became investors in the Kansas City Current, adding a National Women’s Soccer League team to their growing portfolio. The three investments give Mahomes a presence across football, baseball and soccer. More importantly, they all have a connection to Kansas City, the city where he has built much of his professional identity. That local connection could become an important part of his long-term legacy.
Patrick Mahomes is building a business legacy beyond the Chiefs
Mahomes is still firmly focused on his NFL career. At this stage, there is no indication that his ownership interests are taking attention away from his responsibilities with the Chiefs.Instead, they offer a glimpse into how he could shape his career away from the field.Professional athletes have increasingly moved into ownership and investment as they look for ways to build wealth and influence beyond their playing years. Mahomes is taking that route while he is still at the peak of his football career. That makes his approach particularly interesting.Rather than waiting until retirement to explore business opportunities, Mahomes has already established relationships with multiple professional franchises. Each investment gives him experience inside a different part of the sports industry and adds another layer to his growing business profile. His involvement with the Kansas City Current is especially significant because women’s sports have continued to attract greater attention, investment and commercial interest. Mahomes’ presence adds another high-profile name to that movement. There is also a personal element to his investments. Mahomes has become closely associated with Kansas City since entering the NFL, and his ownership interests strengthen those ties. The quarterback’s playing career will eventually come to an end, as every athlete’s does. His business career, however, could have a much longer runway. For now, Mahomes is doing both. He is trying to add more championships to his Chiefs résumé while quietly building a portfolio that could define the next chapter of his life.If that portfolio continues to grow, his legacy in Kansas City may ultimately extend well beyond what he accomplishes between the lines.
