A historic open-air stage in Memphis, Tennessee, built for just $14,000 during the Great Depression, is celebrating nine decades of live music with a major series of public concerts. The Overton Park Shell, built in 1936 as a Works Progress Administration project, became internationally known 18 years later when 19-year-old Elvis Presley performed his first paid professional show on its stage. Today, 90 years after its first performance, the iconic venue remains an active community music centre, hosting dozens of free and ticketed concerts each season. From Depression-era construction to rock and roll history
Designed by architect Max Furbringer and based on the famous Hollywood Bowl, the acoustic band shell was built with joint funding from the City of Memphis and the federal government. When it opened in September 1936, construction had cost about $14,000. The venue was designed as an affordable outdoor performance space for the wider public. On 30 July 1954, the venue became part of modern music history. A young Elvis Presley appeared on the stage as an opening act for country musician Slim Whitman. Original promotional posters listed him as “Elvis Pressley”. The performance was Presley’s first advertised, paid professional appearance after the release of his debut Sun Records single, “That’s All Right”. According to historical records on the Overton Park Shell portal, Presley’s energetic movements on the wooden stage drew a strong reaction from the audience. The performance helped establish a new style of live rock and roll shows that would later spread around the world. Over the following decades, the stage welcomed a wide range of musicians, including country pioneer Johnny Cash, blues legend Furry Lewis, classical orchestras, and modern indie bands. This helped establish the shell as one of the most historically important open-air music venues in the United States.
Community fight saves venue from demolition
Despite its history, the venue faced serious neglect and possible demolition in the late 20th century. In the mid-1980s, commercial redevelopment plans proposed replacing the amphitheatre with a parking lot. Local activists and arts supporters formed Save Our Shell, a grassroots group that stopped the demolition plans and helped secure municipal protection for the site. A later major restoration project was carried out with the Levitt Foundation. The venue was then known as the Levitt Shell for more than a decade. In 2022, the non-profit board that operates the venue officially restored its original historical name, the Overton Park Shell, while also expanding its work to include mobile outreach programmes. Action News 5 reported that the non-profit organisation running the stage now depends on corporate sponsorships, private donations and partnerships with the city to maintain the historic structure while keeping free public access to the arts.
90 years of performances marked with major lineup
To celebrate its 90th anniversary season, Overton Park Shell management announced an expanded concert programme featuring a mix of local, national and international artists. The programme includes the Shell Yeah! Benefit Concert Series as well as the long-running Free Concert Series, which provides accessible music programmes to tens of thousands of visitors each year. According to schedules published on the official Overton Park Shell platform, the anniversary events cover genres from Delta blues and soul to modern alternative rock and brass bands. The varied programme reflects the long and diverse musical history of Memphis. Along with concerts at the main amphitheatre in Overton Park, the organisation has expanded its reach through the “Shell on Wheels” initiative. The mobile programme uses a specially designed vehicle to take live music, sound equipment and staging directly to underserved neighbourhoods across Memphis and Shelby County. Leaders of the non-profit organisation said in updates provided to Action News 5 that the 90-year milestone shows the lasting importance of public cultural spaces. As the autumn season continues, the open-air stage remains an important part of the Memphis music community, operating on the same ground where a young truck driver once helped change the course of popular music.
