Story of ‘Ranabaali’
Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, ‘Ranabaali’ draws on the Great Madras Famine of 1876–78 to tell a story of resistance against British colonial rule. Vijay Deverakonda plays Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a man who challenges the oppressive regime amid widespread suffering. Rashmika Mandanna portrays Jayamma, his wife. The narrative explores how colonial policies worsened the famine and follows Ranabaali as he emerges as a protector of people affected by the crisis.
ETimes review of ‘Ranabaali’
ETimes awarded ‘Ranabaali’ three-and-a-half out of five stars. The review praised Vijay Deverakonda’s portrayal of the determined protagonist and Rashmika Mandanna’s performance as Jayamma. Our exclusive review read, “Vijay Deverakonda delivers a compelling performance as the fiery protagonist, convincingly portraying a man driven by rage and purpose. Rashmika Mandanna, as Jayamma, brings restraint and warmth to the narrative. Their romance lends emotional weight to the story without overshadowing its larger political backdrop.Visually, the film is mounted on a grand scale, with the production design effectively recreating the period. Rahul Sankrityan succeeds in presenting history through an accessible commercial lens while shedding light on a tragedy that remains largely absent from mainstream cinema.”DISCLAIMER: The box office numbers and the data in this article are compiled from public and industry sources.
