Music has crossed political borders for decades, and the Philadelphia Orchestra is preparing to continue that tradition with a $10.5 million gift from former US ambassador David L Cohen and his wife, Rhonda R Cohen. According to the orchestra and Ensemble Arts’ official announcement on October 22, 2026, the commitment will support international tours, cultural exchanges and new music. It comes ahead of the orchestra’s 14th visit to China, continuing a relationship that began in 1973, when it became the first American orchestra to perform in the People’s Republic of China. The gift will also support emerging composers and strengthen the organisation’s leadership.
$10.5 million gift to support cultural diplomacy
The commitment is designed to strengthen the Philadelphia Orchestra’s role as a cultural ambassador through performances and exchanges across national borders. According to the official announcement, the gift will establish the Fund for Cultural Diplomacy, supporting domestic and international tours, residencies, concerts, recordings and educational exchanges. The initiative aims to use music to build relationships between communities and countries, even when diplomatic and political relations face challenges. David Cohen and Rhonda Cohen said they had witnessed how music could build trust and bring people together during their years of public service. The announcement comes as the orchestra prepares to travel to South Korea and China. Its forthcoming Asian tour will combine performances with opportunities for cultural exchange, including engagement with local communities and arts leaders. The funding is intended to help sustain such activities over the longer term.
From a historic China visit to a continuing diplomatic role
The Philadelphia Orchestra’s relationship with China dates back to 1973, when it became the first American orchestra to perform in the country. More than five decades later, its upcoming visit will be its 14th tour of China, the highest number of such visits by any American orchestra, according to the organisation. The orchestra’s international work has also included performances in Canada. During Cohen’s tenure as US ambassador to Canada from 2021 to 2025, the ensemble toured Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. In an interview with WHYY, David L Cohen described the goodwill and attention generated by the orchestra’s performances. The experience reinforced his belief that cultural institutions can contribute to international relations in ways that traditional diplomatic engagements may not always achieve. The upcoming tour will open in Incheon, South Korea, on November 5, before continuing to Seoul and then China, where the orchestra is scheduled to perform in Haikou and Beijing, with additional residency activities in Shenzhen and Shanghai. The visit will bring together music, international engagement and opportunities to strengthen cultural connections.
New fund to champion underrepresented composers
Alongside international touring, the donation will support artistic innovation through the creation of the Artistic Innovation and Discovery Fund. Guided by music and artistic director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s artistic vision, the fund will help the orchestra perform works by overlooked, underrepresented and emerging composers, while also celebrating the contributions of Jewish artists. The initiative aligns with Nézet-Séguin’s efforts to broaden the classical repertoire beyond its established composers. The orchestra has previously championed works by Black American composers Florence Price and William Grant Still. Its recording of Price’s music won a Grammy Award in 2022, bringing renewed attention to a composer whose work had long received less prominence in the classical music world. The new fund is intended to build on such efforts by creating more opportunities for diverse artistic voices to reach audiences through performances and recordings. It will help the orchestra expand its repertoire and bring a wider range of musical perspectives to the concert hall.
Leadership position to carry the Cohens’ names
The $10.5 million commitment will also provide an endowment for the organisation’s top executive position. Ryan Fleur, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts, will hold the newly named ‘Ambassador David L Cohen and Rhonda R Cohen President and CEO’ position. The naming recognises the couple’s contribution to the institution and their involvement in civic and philanthropic life in Philadelphia. David Cohen previously served as senior adviser to the CEO and senior executive vice-president at Comcast NBCUniversal, and as US ambassador to Canada. Rhonda Cohen is a retired attorney and civic leader who chairs the board of the Glenmede Trust Company and has served on several educational and community organisations. The gift was announced following a major fundraising campaign by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts that raised $344 million, surpassing its original target of $330 million. The organisation said the campaign proceeds would support operations, maintain venues including the Kimmel Center, Academy of Music and Miller Theater, and strengthen its endowment.
Music as a bridge between countries
The donation comes as the orchestra prepares to return to Asia at a time of international political uncertainty. Its leadership has emphasised that the tour is centred on music, cultural exchange and opportunities to build connections across borders.By combining international performances with educational activities, support for new music and long-term institutional funding, the Cohen gift is intended to extend the orchestra’s work beyond the concert hall. Its historic China tours have helped establish a distinctive role for the ensemble in cultural diplomacy, while the new funds aim to sustain that role for future generations.
